Ane Brun: Rarities

We all know artists love playing a good cover at a gig, sometimes they slip one onto a single as a b-side, or even as a sly album track, but what if an artist had performed so many stunning covers that they could actually get away with releasing a double CD of them? Yup, Ane Brun’s pretty something.

The record in itself is seriously beautiful and perfectly Ane Brun. She makes every song her own and some of them, yup, I’m going to say it… so much better than the originals. The below are my absolute favourites x

Jóga (Björk cover, live at the 2010 Polar Music Prize)

Ain’t No Cure For Love (Leonard Cohen Cover)

VOLCANO CHOIR: BYEGONE

I had the unexpected surprise of having two of my friends* exclaim that they’d never heard of Volcano Choir this morning. I didn’t quite know what to say, I had rather lazily assumed that they must know who they are. So … this is for those of you who haven’t had the joy of discovering this band yet, I envy you, and I apologise for not blogging it sooner.

I’m seeing them on Monday and I really hope the stage lighting is as well timed as this video x

* Not just any friends I might add, ones that I have been to gigs with, swapped mixtapes and discussed on length the merits of a good string section, you know, the music-conversationalist type.

Mononoke: Alice

I love it when classic children’s books get mentioned in songs, especially when done as beautifully as this Alice in Wonderland delight. Mononoke has created such a gem of a song x

Highs: Highs EP

My sister kindly sent me the link to Highs bandcamp page on Wednesday, I’ve been listening to the Highs EP ever since. They’re a cross between Local Natives, Of Monsters and Men and The Maccabees (guitar riffs). Have a listen and see what you think, I for one think they’re pretty special x

Basia Bulat: It Can’t Be You

I had the absolute pleasure of seeing the lovely Basia Bulat perform live at Bandstand Busking today. She started the set with this gem, It Can’t Be You, and had the whole crowd in the palm of her hand, in fact, the bearded man stood next to me had a hard time reigning in his exclamations of ‘WOW’ (definitely in capital letters) throughout the entire song, he was that impressed. I’d recommend seeing her live in a heartbeat x
